Transition from 2d to 3d

Look at these two shapes.

What difference do you immediately notice? Let’s find it out together.

The circle is a two-dimensional shape and has length and width. However the ball has three dimensions which are length, width and depth.

There are several ways to transition from a two-dimensional shape to a three-dimensional shape geometrically.

 

In this picture we see that the circle is on the two dimensinal coordinate system and has two coordinates.

This ball is on the three-dimensional coordinate system and has three coordinates from the three axes.
