Light and shadow

Where there is light, there is also shadow. This sentence is not only a thoughtful phrase in everyday life, but also fits our chapter very well. In this chapter we want to look at light and shadow and better understand their using in 3D and art.

Learning about light and shadow can be a fun and interesting way to explore the fundamentals of photography and art. Some key concepts to understand when learning about light and shadow include the properties of light, the effects of different lighting conditions on an image, and how to use light and shadow to create depth and dimension in a composition.

Light can come from a variety of sources. A distinction is primarily made between natural light sources and artificial ones. Natural light sources are created without human involvement. The most important natural light source is the sun, which plays an important role especially in landscape painting. Other natural light sources are, for example, lightning or stars. Accordingly, artificial light sources are created by one. These include, for example, all kinds of lamps (street lamps, flashlights…), but also candles or fire burning in the fireplace.

Basically, a shadow is created when an object blocks the light source. In this case, this object is opaque. This includes a book, a house and so on. A shadow is therefore an area where no light falls.

Shadow is an important element in art, as it can be used to create depth, contrast, and atmosphere in a composition. By manipulating the direction, intensity, and quality of light in an image, artists can create a range of effects using shadow, from subtle and nuanced to bold and dramatic.

In order to unterstand better the topic, let’s do an example. Turn off the lights and close your curtains too. We need three things: A light source, e.g. flashlight, a straight surface e.g. a wall at home or a piece of paper and an opaque thing for instance a pen or mouse from your computer. When we have all of them, we can get started.

Position your stuff between the light source and the surface. Move it. How does the shadow change? Is shadow bigger or smaller, wenn stuff is near the light source?
